St. Christopher’s Hospice

St. Christopher's HospiceSt Christopher’s Hospice, of Lawrie Park Road, Sydenham, cares for terminally ill cancer patients. The Hospice saved over £2,000 when we sent four of our builders to work for the charity.

The roofers who volunteered included Fred Cutajar, 47, of Powster, Bromley; Ken Holman, 52, of Sandringham Drive, Welling; Alec Gallego, 54, of The Glen, Shortlands; and Leto Pinchen, 23, of Derby Hill, Forest Hill.

The builders gave up a weekend to work on the Hospice roof.

The roof had been leaking over the hospice’s administration block and education centre, where hospice carers are trained.

Mr Cutajar said, “We had to work between rain showers, but it was a pleasure to help the hospice, give something back to the community and show people not all builders are the same.”

The roofing firm’s manager Lyn Rushworth said, “Builders do have a bad name, especially with all those TV programmes about builders from hell but our firm has been around for over 30 years and we like to help people out. So, when the hospice approached us for an estimate, we thought we would do it for free. It’s nice in this day and age when everything is so money-grabbing.”

Hospice communications manager Clare Barracliffe said, “We’re really grateful to Chris Ball Roofing for supporting the hospice and fixing our roof for free.”
